Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I'm 65 years old and have been experiencing discomfort around my navel. A recent diagnosis confirmed an umbilical hernia. Rather than opting for surgery right away, I'm curious if there are any non-surgical, natural treatments that can help me maintain my abdominal health and prevent the condition from worsening.  Additionally, I'm interested in learning about any physical therapy or oxygen therapy options that might alleviate the discomfort associated with an umbilical hernia. The discomfort has been centered around my navel, and I'm keen to explore all possible avenues before considering surgery.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It appears there are two potential contributors to your abdominal discomfort. First part is having the umbilical hernia, which typically requires surgical treatment for complete resolution. However, the urgency of surgery depends on many factors most importantly is incarceration which might lead more serious complications.

The second possible source of your discomfort could be related to gallstones. In this case, surgical removal is usually the primary treatment option.

Thanks
