Hello Doctor,
I was shot about 15 years ago, over 30 times. I still have bullet fragments inside my body, which caused paralysis. Because of these bullets, I am unable to get an MRI, and doctors are unsure about the exact level of my spinal injury. What alternative scans or treatment options are available to determine my injury level?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. Since an MRI is not an option due to the presence of bullet fragments, a CT scan is the next best imaging method. A CT myelogram can provide additional details about your spinal cord and nerve roots by using contrast dye injected into the spinal canal, followed by CT imaging. This can help identify the level of spinal injury, areas of compression, and nerve involvement.
2. In addition to imaging, electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies can help assess nerve function and the extent of damage. Based on these findings, treatment options may include physical therapy, nerve stimulation, pain management, or even surgical interventions if required. Consulting a spinal specialist or neurosurgeon will provide further guidance on the best course of action.
Thanks
