Hello Doctor,
I had my follicle puncture on January 29th, and the transfer of two 5-day embryos took place on February 3rd. Despite some water build-up in my belly, my stomach has been growing and painful since the transfer. I went to the gynecologist today, and they diagnosed moderate-onset OHSS, for which I’m receiving daily heparin jabs and prednisolone. What worries me is that the gynecologist said I should continue with the Gonasi HP injections for another 3 days, even though I’ve been using them since the day after the transfer. Could Gonasi worsen my OHSS?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Gonasi HP injections are part of fertility treatment, and they help support early pregnancy by providing human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which is essential for a developing pregnancy. However, HCG can sometimes exacerbate ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which is why your gynecologist is closely monitoring your condition. The medications you’ve been given, such as heparin, are aimed at preventing complications from OHSS, and the situation should improve within 7-10 days. It’s important to follow the guidance provided by your fertility center.
There are alternative medications, such as progesterone (Prontogest 400 vaginal suppository), that are often used to support pregnancy without worsening OHSS, but each IVF center may have different treatment protocols. Your healthcare team is closely following your progress, and it’s crucial to continue with the prescribed plan to avoid complications.
