Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I got my ear pierced about 15 to 20 days ago, and starting last night, I noticed that my ear is swollen and painful. I took a painkiller, and it seemed to help for a while, but once the painkiller wore off, the swelling and pain returned. What could be causing this, and what should I do to alleviate the swelling and pain?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Possible Causes:

1. Infection: It's possible that your ear piercing has become infected, especially if you're experiencing swelling, pain, and tenderness.

2. Irritation: Sometimes, the piercing site can become irritated due to factors like friction from clothing or hair, or using certain cleaning products.

3. Allergic Reaction: If you used a metal for your earring that you're allergic to, it could cause swelling, pain, and inflammation.

4. Trauma: Accidental trauma to the piercing site, such as pulling or snagging the earring, can cause swelling and pain.

Thanks
