Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

What preventive measures can be taken for ear cellulitis? In June of last year, I developed cellulitis on the outer area of my right ear. I have been experiencing a recurring sore in the crease of my ear, which scabs and bleeds. Now, I have noticed the same sore in the same location. Should I consult a medical professional? Is it worrisome to have a persistent sore that scabs and bleeds in the crease of my right ear? Any recommendations for home remedies or preventive measures?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

I apologize for the trouble you are experiencing with your ear. In regards to cellulitis, it can occur due to skin irritation caused by allergies, scratching, or disruption of the normal skin flora, leading to invasion of underlying structures. Alternatively, it could originate from nearby structures. To address this, thorough cleansing with a non-irritating agent/soap and regular application of antibiotic ointments or plain petroleum jelly can be effective. If the issue persists, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with an ENT specialist or a dermatologist.

Thanks
