Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I was diagnosed on 12/08/2023 with left-sided otitis media after an urgent care visit for ear pain. I was prescribed Amoxicillin 500mg and completed the course of antibiotics a few days ago. However, after finishing the medication, I began experiencing symptoms of a sinus infection, like pain behind my eyes and congestion. I’m still experiencing ear pain on the left side, along with ringing in both ears. What could this be, and what should I do if I can't make it to the doctor?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It sounds like your symptoms may require a longer course of antibiotics, especially if the infection hasn’t fully resolved. If the ear pain you're experiencing is more of a sharp, occasional pain that lasts for seconds to minutes, it could potentially be a different condition, such as trigeminal neuralgia, which causes intense, brief bursts of pain along the nerve.

2. However, since you are still experiencing ear pain and ringing in the ears, it's important to follow up with a healthcare provider. If you're unable to make it to the doctor, I recommend scheduling a telemedicine appointment or visiting an urgent care clinic to get a more precise diagnosis and discuss the best course of action moving forward.

Thanks
