Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have blocked Eustachian tubes and a long flight coming up. Should I cancel the flight due to the risk of pain and possible damage to the ear?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

There is no need to cancel your flight. Here are some measures you can take to help alleviate discomfort and minimize the risk of further issues with your blocked Eustachian tubes:

1. Keep a cotton plug in both your ears throughout the flight.

2. Chew gum during the flight to help equalize pressure in your ears.

3. Avoid cold water and beverages during the flight.

4. Refrain from violently blowing your nose or coughing.

For treatment, you can try the following:

1. Use Otrivin nasal drops, 3 drops in both nostrils twice a day for 2 days prior to the flight.

2. Take Tab Levocetrizine plus montelukast combination once at night for 10 days after dinner.

3. Take Cap ABFLO N, 1-0-1, for 5 days after breakfast and after dinner.

Thanks
