Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Can a tooth cavity lead to my ear infections? For the third consecutive summer, I have been experiencing an infection in my left ear, consistently in late June. Additionally, I have a cavity in my lower left molar, which has been treated but not completely resolved.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Yes, tooth caries can cause pain in the ear. This condition is known as referred ear pain. Since the same nerve supplies the tooth and the ear, nerve irritation caused by tooth caries can result in ear pain. It is important to note that ear pain is not always solely due to an ear infection.

Thanks
