What It Means When SGPT and SGOT Levels Are High?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Recently did some blood tests and noticed that both my SGPT (ALT) and SGOT (AST) levels are higher than the normal range. I'm not experiencing any major symptoms, but I'm feeling a bit tired lately. I'm really worried now—could this mean there's a problem with my liver? What could be the cause of these elevated levels, and what should I do next? Should I see a specialist or get more tests done? Please help me understand what steps to take.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Elevated levels of SGPT (ALT) and SGOT (AST) normally indicate stress or inflammation on the liver. The reasons are various, such as fatty liver, alcoholism, drugs, viral hepatitis, or even musculoskeletal complaints.

In order to determine what specifically is happening, I highly suggest performing two critical tests:

1. Fibroscan – Rapid, pain-free scan to verify stiffness in your liver. Detects any scar tissue or underlying damage to your liver.

2. Ultrasound of the Entire Abdomen – This reveals the shape of your liver and other organs, and can help diagnose conditions such as fatty liver or swelling.

These tests will guide us in making the next move. In most instances, changing your lifestyle to a healthy diet, no alcohol, and exercise can restore enzyme levels to normal.

For the meantime, don't drink alcohol, have light and healthy food, and drink plenty of water.

Thanks
