Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m a 17-year-old girl, and I have a painful lump on the outer side of my left breast. It’s hard and painful when touched, with a light burning sensation. I recently stopped wearing bras, and I wonder if this might be related. Could the coffee I drank today make the pain stronger? What could this be?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

A lump in the breast should always be checked by a healthcare professional. It could be a benign condition like fibroadenosis or fibroma, which is common and often related to hormonal changes, especially around your menstrual cycle. However, it’s also important to rule out more serious conditions, such as cancer. An ultrasound or MRI is needed to determine the type of lump. Since the pain is localized and there’s a change in your symptoms, it’s a good idea to see a doctor, preferably a surgeon, to evaluate it further and determine if removal is necessary.

Thanks
