Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Three weeks ago, I experienced red blood in my stool for three days, along with black stool. However, two days ago, I had hemoglobin and occult tests, and the results were all normal. Does this mean I do not have colon cancer?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

There are several factors to consider, such as age, food preferences, family history of colon cancer, previous history of hemorrhoids, peptic ulcer disease, or constipation that may lead to rectal fissures, causing fresh blood in stool. I suggest consulting a gastroenterologist for a more thorough investigation. In the meantime, you may benefit from a high-fiber diet and avoiding highly colored foods. If you experience significant changes in bowel movements, bladder function, or noticeable weight loss, it’s important to seek medical intervention as soon as possible.

Thanks
