Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve been on birth control for the past two years, and it has completely stopped my periods. But for the past three days, I’ve been having light spotting, along with a headache, mild cramping, and feeling unusually cold. I’m not sure what could be causing this—should I be concerned?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Long-term use of birth control pills can sometimes lead to absent periods, but breakthrough spotting can still occur. Your symptoms could be due to hormonal fluctuations, but it's important to rule out other possible causes. I recommend consulting a doctor for an evaluation, which may include a Pap smear and an ultrasound to check for any underlying issues. If needed, adjusting or changing your contraceptive method might help. Proper diagnosis is key before starting any treatment.

Thanks
