Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had protected sex on January 19th, and I took Plan B the next day just to be extra safe. I got my period a little over a week later, so I wasn’t too worried. However, over the past few days, I’ve been feeling bloated, but otherwise, I feel fine. The bloating hasn’t gotten worse, but it’s noticeable. Could this still be a side effect of Plan B, or is there another possible cause?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It’s reassuring that you had protected sex and took Plan B, especially since you also had a period afterward. However, Plan B can sometimes cause hormonal fluctuations that lead to bloating, digestive changes, or mild cycle irregularities.

2. That being said, if you're feeling persistent bloating, it's a good idea to take a home pregnancy test to rule out any possibility, just to be safe. If symptoms continue or worsen, I’d also recommend scheduling a check-up with your doctor for further evaluation, possibly including an ultrasound to rule out any other causes, such as ovarian cysts or digestive issues.

Thanks
