Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

What does having yellow semen mean? I am 17 years old and have been experiencing this for the last few months.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Experiencing yellow semen can be concerning, but it can occur for several reasons. Some benign causes include mixing of residual urine with semen during ejaculation, particularly if ejaculation happens shortly after urination. Certain foods, like garlic, onions, or asparagus, can also cause a yellowish tint due to their sulfur content, or food dyes in processed foods. Dehydration can lead to concentrated semen, which might appear yellow, often accompanied by dark urine. Additionally, long gaps between ejaculations can result in older sperm accumulating, giving the semen a yellowish color. However, medical conditions like sexually transmitted infections (STIs), prostate issues, or leukocytospermia (elevated white blood cells in semen) can also cause yellow semen, often with additional symptoms like pain, fever, or unusual discharge. Jaundice, caused by liver dysfunction, can also lead to yellowing of the skin, eyes, and semen. If yellow semen persists or is accompanied by pain, fever, or unusual discharge, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional for evaluation and treatment.
