Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve been drinking whiskey pretty often for a while now, and I’m almost 21. Over the past six months, I’ve thrown up blood twice, and both times it was a lot. I don’t feel sick otherwise, but I’m starting to worry. Could this be something serious? What should I do?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Vomiting blood, especially in large amounts, is a serious concern and should not be ignored. This could indicate gastrointestinal bleeding, which may be caused by conditions such as gastritis, ulcers, or even liver-related issues due to frequent alcohol consumption.

2. You need to consult a gastroenterologist as soon as possible to determine the exact cause. An upper endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD) is essential to examine your esophagus, stomach, and upper intestines for any bleeding sources, ulcers, or damage.

3. Until you see a doctor, avoid alcohol completely, stay hydrated, and monitor for any additional symptoms like black or tarry stools, dizziness, or persistent nausea. If you experience severe weakness, continuous vomiting of blood, or abdominal pain, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Thanks
