Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am 50 years old and have had a duodenal ulcer in the past, but it has healed. Now, I am suffering from typhoid in my blood, with a test result showing i: 80. This has been an ongoing problem for me. Could you help explain what this means?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. When a typhoid test is performed using blood, it typically checks for antibodies against Salmonella typhi, the bacteria that causes typhoid fever. If you've had a previous typhoid infection, the test may still show a positive result even if the infection is no longer active. This is because the antibodies remain in the body long after the infection has cleared.

2. To determine if you currently have an active infection, I would recommend doing a stool culture or a stool typhoid antigen test. These tests specifically look for active Salmonella bacteria or antigens in your stool, which will give a more accurate indication of whether you have an ongoing infection.

3. Please consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and to discuss the best course of action based on your current health status.

Thanks
