Hello Doctor,
I’ve been dealing with a swollen, painful big toe on my right foot for the past few days. There's also some redness around the area. We've tried elevating it, soaking in Epsom salt, using Neosporin, and Ashley's foot spray, but it hasn't improved much. Is there anything else I should do to relieve the pain and swelling, or could this be a sign of something more serious?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. A swollen and red big toe could indeed indicate severe inflammation, possibly due to gouty arthritis, which is often triggered by uric acid crystals accumulating in the joint. You would likely need anti-inflammatory medication to reduce the swelling and manage the pain.
2. To better assess your condition, it would be helpful if you could send a picture of your toe so I can analyze it further. This will assist in confirming the diagnosis and determining the best course of action for treatment.
Thanks
