Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My 7-year-old has been sleeping a lot lately, which is not normal for her. She usually doesn’t take naps or sleep much during the day, but for the past four days, after waking up in the morning, having breakfast, she goes back to sleep for about 4-5 hours. I have to wake her up because it's been affecting her routine. I'm really concerned about this sudden change in her sleep pattern. What could be causing this, and should I be worried?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It's understandable that you're concerned about your child's sudden change in sleep patterns. While excessive sleep could sometimes be a sign of early puberty in girls, it’s important to first rule out any potential infections, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), which can cause fatigue and changes in behavior. If no underlying medical cause is found after a thorough evaluation, it may simply be a temporary phase, which can be common in growing children. However, it’s always a good idea to consult with your pediatrician to ensure everything is normal and to ease your concerns.

Thanks
