Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had a pilonidal cyst and I packed it with gauze for months after it burst. It hasn’t come back, but sometimes the area feels itchy. There's no sign of infection, though. Should I continue packing it, or is it fine to stop now?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Usually, when the wound has healed and is shallower, gauze packing is no longer necessary. You should observe if the area is still draining. If there’s no drainage and the wound appears to be healing well, you can likely discontinue the packing. However, if you notice any signs of infection or worsening symptoms, it’s important to consult your healthcare provider for further guidance.

Thanks
