Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve noticed some random brown and pale spots appearing on my chest. They don’t itch or hurt, but I’m not sure what’s causing them. Should I be worried?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

1. The brown and pale spots on your chest may be caused by pityriasis versicolor, a mild fungal infection. This condition often appears as discolored patches on oily areas like the chest, back, and shoulders. It’s typically not painful, though it can cause mild itching.

2. To treat this, try using clotrimazole 1% antifungal cream, applied twice a day for 2-4 weeks. You can also use antifungal shampoos like ketoconazole or selenium sulfide if needed. These treatments usually work well, but the skin's color may take a few weeks to return to normal.

3. If the spots spread or don’t improve, or if you’re unsure about the diagnosis, it’s best to see a doctor for further evaluation.

Thanks
