Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have started getting this small red/purple dots on my skin in August 2023. First it started on my inner thigh (after sunburn), then slowly it spread to both of my inner thighs and both arms. What could this be? I don’t have any other symptoms.

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Based on your description, it seems like you might be experiencing a condition known as petechiae. Petechiae are small, round spots that appear on the skin due to bleeding under the skin. They are commonly red, purple, or brown. Sunburn can cause petechiae, but it’s unusual for them to spread without other symptoms. However, there are several other conditions that could potentially cause similar symptoms, including:

  1. Purpura: Larger areas of bleeding under the skin that can result from a variety of conditions, such as blood clotting disorders, certain medications, or inflammation of blood vessels.
  2. Vasculitis: Inflammation of the blood vessels, which can cause red or purple spots on the skin.
  3. Certain infections: Some viral, bacterial, or fungal infections can cause a rash that might look like small red or purple spots.

It’s important to get a definitive diagnosis from a healthcare provider, as the treatment will depend on the underlying cause. If the spots are spreading, changing in appearance, or associated with other symptoms such as fever, pain, or unexplained bruising, seek medical attention immediately.

Thanks
