Hello Doctor,
I had a Pilonidal cyst in May, which burst and healed with daily gauze packing. Recently, after traveling, the area became tender, though the cyst hasn't returned. I'm now experiencing a "shock itch" sensation that comes and goes, especially when stressed or anxious. There's no infection, and I’m still using gauze and Hibiclens. Is this normal, and should I be concerned?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. It sounds like you're taking great care of the area, but based on your description, if the wound is shallow and not draining, the daily gauze packing may no longer be necessary. Gauze packing is typically used to help promote drainage in deeper or actively draining wounds. If the wound is healed, keeping the area dry and clean should be sufficient, and you might consider reducing the use of gauze to avoid unnecessary irritation.
2. As for the shock-like itching sensation, it could be related to nerve sensitivity or irritation in the area, especially since it seems to coincide with stress or anxiety. This could be a normal response from your body as it heals, but if it persists or worsens, it would be best to consult your healthcare provider to rule out any underlying issues.
3. Continue to monitor the area for signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), but if the tenderness and itching don't worsen, it may just be part of the healing process.
Thanks
