Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I hope this message finds you well. Recently, I experienced an episode of stress that led me to pick at an area of my face, despite there being no apparent blemishes. To my dismay, upon awakening, I noticed the emergence of several bumps resembling pimples, containing clear liquid. After succumbing to the temptation to pop them, the affected area became raised and red. Prior to my intervention, there were no blisters or any other visible issues in that area. Despite this, someone suggested that these symptoms might indicate a cold sore. However, I find it perplexing that picking at an unaffected area could lead to such an outcome, especially considering the absence of any initial blisters.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

In my capacity as a dermatologist, I would like to shed light on the nature of the bumps you have described. These manifestations appear to be a consequence of trauma inflicted upon the skin through picking, subsequently provoking inflammation and the formation of fluid-filled bumps. It is noteworthy that this presentation does not align with the typical progression of cold sores. Cold sores, primarily induced by the herpes simplex virus, typically commence with sensations of tingling or burning, evolving into painful blisters thereafter. However, it is imperative to acknowledge the variability in skin reactions to diverse forms of irritation or trauma. Moreover, these bumps may potentially signify a manifestation of dermatitis or an underlying infection. To ascertain a definitive diagnosis and implement appropriate treatment measures, I recommend seeking professional evaluation without delay. Meanwhile, it is advisable to refrain from further manipulation of the affected area to mitigate the risk of scarring or exacerbating any existing infection. Application of a mild, fragrance-free moisturizer and, if necessary, a gentle over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can aid in alleviating inflammation.

Your health remains paramount,

Dr. Galen
