Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have a medium-sized cyst on the back of my neck that's swollen and red. Can you provide insight and advice on the best course of action?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

A cyst is a sac-like pocket of tissue that can contain fluid, air, or other substances. They can appear anywhere on your body, including the neck. Swelling and redness can often indicate infection or inflammation. If the cyst on your neck has become red and swollen, it could potentially be infected. This can occur when bacteria enter the cyst. Symptoms of an infected cyst can include redness, tenderness, increased swelling, and sometimes a white or yellowish discharge. In some cases, an inflamed or infected cyst may require a minor surgical procedure for drainage. Antibiotics may also be prescribed if the infection is severe or if it has spread into the surrounding skin. However, it's important not to try to squeeze or puncture the cyst yourself, as this can lead to further infection or scarring.

Thanks
