Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

After healing from a cold sore, the area remains red. Can I safely engage in oral sex now? How can I know if I'm still contagious?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Cold sores, also known as herpes labialis, are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). While the risk of transmission is highest when active blisters are present, the virus can still potentially be transmitted even when sores are not visible. This phenomenon is known as asymptomatic shedding. If the area where you had the cold sore is fully healed, the risk of transmission is lower but not completely eliminated. It's challenging to determine precisely when you're no longer contagious, as this can vary from person to person. However, as a general guideline, when the area appears fully healed and there are no visible signs of a cold sore, the risk of transmission decreases. Using a barrier method, such as a dental dam, can provide an extra layer of protection against transmission. Additionally, maintaining open communication with your partner about your concerns and any potential risks is crucial for mutual understanding and safety.

Thanks
