Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am thinking about getting involved with a person with HSV-1, what is the likelihood of me getting infected and is there anything I should be worried about?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

HSV-1 transmission can occur, but the transmission rate is generally around 5% per year if no precautions are taken. To minimize the risk of infection, it's important to use protection, such as condoms or dental dams, during any intimate contact. However, even with protection, the risk of transmission is significantly higher when your partner has an active outbreak, characterized by a rash or blisters. It is best to avoid intimate contact during this time to reduce the likelihood of contracting the virus. Open communication with your partner and considering antiviral treatments can also help lower the risk.

Thanks
