Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m 45 years old. I first developed vitiligo at the age of 37, and it was very mild back then. However, when I turned 41, it worsened significantly—mainly due to high stress levels. I’ve been undergoing Ayurvedic treatment since then. In the beginning, I saw great improvement. But over the past year, my progress has completely stalled. There has been no visible improvement at all. Recently, I got my vitamin levels checked and found that I’m severely deficient in both Vitamin D and Vitamin B12. Could these deficiencies be the reason why my vitiligo is not improving anymore?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Stress can definitely worsen vitiligo, so managing your stress levels is a key part of treatment. I recommend incorporating stress-reducing habits like meditation, yoga, or speaking with a counselor.

2. Your vitamin deficiencies—especially low Vitamin D and B12—can affect your skin and immune system, and may be contributing to the lack of progress in your vitiligo treatment. I suggest starting supplements after speaking with your doctor.

3. Also, please get your thyroid hormones checked. Vitiligo is often linked to thyroid issues like hypothyroidism, which can impact treatment success.

4. As for the treatment itself, the best choice depends on many factors—such as how much skin is affected, the location of patches, your overall health, and whether the condition is stable or spreading. While Ayurvedic treatment can be helpful, sometimes combining it with other approaches like phototherapy or topical medicines gives better results.

5. In short, address stress, correct vitamin levels, check your thyroid, and then discuss the most suitable treatment path with your doctor.

Thanks
