Hello Doctor,
I’ve recently noticed some patches of dry, scaly skin, and I’m worried it might be psoriasis. Can you tell me who is most likely to get psoriasis? Also, is it contagious or can it spread to others?
Hello
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Psoriasis is mainly genetic in origin, which means it often runs in families. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the skin, speeding up the production of skin cells. As a result, the skin forms red, scaly patches that can be itchy or inflamed. While triggers like stress, infections, or skin injuries can cause flare-ups, the condition itself is linked to your genes.
Importantly, psoriasis is not contagious. You cannot catch it through physical contact with someone who has the condition. It is a chronic autoimmune disorder, and the risk of developing it depends on your genetics and other factors, not on close contact with others.
Thanks
