Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I used Cetaphil and now my face has many bumps and is very red. My post-acne scars are also more visible. Can you please suggest a good cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen that will help calm my bumps and redness?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

As a dermatologist, I recommend discontinuing the use of Cetaphil for now to prevent further irritation. Instead, I suggest trying a gentle, hypoallergenic cleanser that is free of fragrances and harsh chemicals. One option you might consider is the Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser, which is known for its soothing properties and is suitable for sensitive skin.

In addition to a gentle cleanser, it's important to use a moisturizer that will help restore your skin's natural barrier and provide hydration without causing further irritation. I recommend trying CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, as it is formulated for sensitive skin and contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid to help lock in moisture and soothe the skin.

When it comes to sunscreen, it's essential to choose a product that offers broad-spectrum protection and is suitable for sensitive skin. I suggest using a mineral-based sunscreen like EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46. This sunscreen is oil-free, which can be beneficial if you're prone to acne, and it contains ingredients like niacinamide, which can help calm the skin and reduce redness.

It's important to keep in mind that everyone's skin is unique, so what works for one person may not work for another. It may take some trial and error to find the right combination of products that work best for your skin type and concerns.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, I recommend scheduling an appointment with a dermatologist for further evaluation and personalized treatment options.

Thank you for trusting me with your skincare concerns, and I wish you the best of luck on your journey to healthier, happier skin.
