Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I've been experiencing constant aches and pains in my right shoulder for over a week now. The pain seems to be spreading, moving up my neck, down the front side of my chest, into my shoulder blades, and down my side. But today, I've noticed something new - I have no strength in my right hand and wrist. What could be causing these symptoms, and what should I do about it?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Concerns and Possible Causes: Right shoulder pain spreading to the chest and shoulder could be due to:

A) Osteoarthritis

B) Peripheral Neuropathy

C) Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

D) Rotator Cuff Syndrome

Diagnostic Recommendations: Consider imaging (X-rays, CT scans) and lab tests (antinuclear antibody assays) for diagnosis.

Treatment Approach: Prescription of analgesics like naproxen or celecoxib, and steroids like prednisone may be necessary. For autoimmune conditions, chloroquine and plasmapheresis could be considered.

Specific Management Strategies: Surgical repair for Shoulder Impingement Syndrome; Neuropathic pain medications like amitriptyline, gabapentin, or pregabalin.

Specialist Consultation: Consult with an orthopedic or neurosurgery specialist.

Supportive Measures: Use a shoulder brace or sling for support during recovery.

Thanks
