Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have random itching, mostly on my feet, especially when it's cold or wet. My hands itch too, and sometimes even my private area. This started after I felt sick for about two days. In the past, when I had these symptoms, it usually meant I had malaria, but I'm not sure if that's the case now. Is this normal? I really need help because it's making me very uncomfortable.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. The itching you're experiencing, especially on your feet, hands, and private area, could be caused by scabies, a condition where mites burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching. It’s also possible that your symptoms are related to post-malarial pruritus or another underlying issue like a fungal infection or allergy.

2. I recommend seeing a doctor for a physical examination and possible tests to identify the cause. If it is scabies, treatment typically involves prescribed creams or medications. For now, avoid scratching, keep your skin moisturized, and wear loose clothing. If symptoms worsen, seek medical help.

Thanks
