Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have been menstruating for over 14 days now, and the flow has been light throughout. Normally, I experience heavy bleeding and cramps, but my period only lasts for about 5 days. I’m concerned because this is much longer than usual. What should I do?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

If your last normal menstrual period was more than 45 days ago, it's a good idea to take a pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy. Abnormal uterine bleeding, like the prolonged or irregular bleeding you're experiencing, can be related to pregnancy or unrelated causes. If you experience heavy vaginal bleeding, abdominal cramps, or a sensation of pressure in the lower abdomen, it could indicate a potential pregnancy-related issue, such as a miscarriage. However, there are many other possible causes for irregular bleeding, including hormonal imbalances or other medical conditions. I recommend seeing a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation to determine the cause and receive appropriate care.

Thanks
