Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I've had Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) stage 3 since 2004 and managed it with blood pressure control and a low-protein, low-sodium diet. For the past eight years, my urine had no protein. However, since starting a naturopath-prescribed herbal treatment in October, I’ve noticed my urine has become foamy, suggesting proteinuria. Could this be linked to the herbal treatment, and what are the treatment options for proteinuria?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. To assess the situation accurately, it is important to start with a urine analysis and a 24-hour urine collection to measure the amount of protein in your urine. This will help determine the severity of the proteinuria and guide decisions regarding any necessary medications.

2. Additionally, a thorough understanding of your medical history is crucial, particularly with regard to blood sugar levels and blood pressure management, as both play a significant role in kidney function.

3. It’s also important to review any medications or treatments you are currently taking, including the herbal supplements prescribed by the naturopath, as they could potentially influence your kidney health. Once we have all this information, we can decide on the most appropriate course of action.

Thanks
