Patient Question

Hello Doctor

My 4-year-old son swells up when bitten by mosquitoes. Is this normal, and how can I help alleviate the swelling in the affected area?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Mosquito bites can lead to swelling due to individual reactions, which vary. Protecting oneself from mosquito bites is crucial as they can transmit diseases like malaria and dengue. Use insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin, wear long sleeves and pants, and use mosquito nets while sleeping. Eliminate standing water around your home where mosquitoes breed, and consider installing screens on windows and doors to prevent entry. If bitten, apply a cold compress and anti-itch cream to alleviate swelling and itching.

Thanks
