Hello Doctor,
I was supposed to get my period on May 20, but it was late. I took four pregnancy tests, and all came back negative. The last one I took was last Thursday. Then, on Saturday night, I started what I think is my period. My question is, should I get a blood pregnancy test just to be sure I wasn’t pregnant? I’m having some cramping, and my period seems heavier than usual for the first and second day. If I don’t get a blood test and I was actually pregnant, could that be harmful in the future? Do I need to see a doctor?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. If your cycle is typically regular (28-30 days), your next period would have been due around June 18-20. Taking a pregnancy test before that date would likely result in a negative result, as it may be too early to detect pregnancy. Since you have now gotten your period, it is unlikely that you are pregnant.
2. However, if you are concerned about the heavier-than-usual bleeding, it would be a good idea to get an abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound to check for possible causes such as a thickened uterine lining, fibroids, or polyps. Additionally, visiting a doctor for an internal examination can help rule out any infections or underlying conditions. Based on the scan results and clinical findings, appropriate treatment can be provided if needed.
