Late Period After i-Pill? Here's What You Need to Know

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had unprotected sex on April 5, one day before my expected period on April 6. I took an i-Pill within 2 hours. It's been 8 days, my period is still late, and I haven’t had any withdrawal bleeding. I took two pregnancy tests — both were negative. Should I be worried?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

1. Since your period is over a week late and there’s been no bleeding after taking the i-Pill, I recommend repeating a urine pregnancy test using early morning urine for the most accurate result. Also, please get a pelvic ultrasound scan — it will help confirm whether there is a pregnancy or rule out any issues with your uterus or ovaries.

2. If both the test and scan are negative, we’ll need to check for other causes of delayed periods such as hormonal imbalance, thyroid problems, PCOS, stress, weight changes, or infections. These can all affect your cycle, and your doctor may suggest hormone and thyroid tests based on the findings.

Thanks
