Hello Doctor,
I was prescribed hydrocodone and oxycodone for my back surgery. I'm out of hydrocodone, and my last dose was 12 hours ago (10mg). I was wondering if it would be okay to take my oxycodone (10mg) now. I weigh about 140 pounds, I'm 5'6", and I'm 26 years old. Would that be safe?
Hello
Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.
1. Oxycodone and hydrocodone are both opioid pain medications, but oxycodone is typically considered stronger than hydrocodone at the same dosage. Since it has been 12 hours since your last 10 mg dose of hydrocodone, it may be safe to take 10 mg of oxycodone now, but this should only be done under the guidance of your prescribing doctor.
2. Switching between opioids should always be done with medical supervision to ensure safety. Your age, weight (140 lbs), height (5'6"), and time since your last dose all contribute to the overall assessment, but it is crucial to follow your doctor's specific recommendations.
