Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Lately, I've been experiencing some concerning symptoms. I've developed a persistent cough, which is often accompanied by short, random, and sharp pains in my chest. Additionally, I've noticed that I'm bringing up phlegm, and I've been running a high temperature. I also want to mention that I vape regularly, and I'm uncertain if this could be contributing to my current illness. Should I be alarmed by these symptoms?

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Firstly, it's commendable that you're considering the potential impact of vaping on your health. While it's difficult to definitively attribute your symptoms solely to vaping, it's worth noting that vaping can irritate the respiratory system and potentially exacerbate existing respiratory issues.

In light of your symptoms, I would recommend temporarily ceasing vaping for a few days to observe any changes in your condition. This can help determine if vaping is indeed a contributing factor to your symptoms.

Additionally, given the presence of coughing, phlegm, and a high temperature, it's prudent to consider a comprehensive approach to treatment. I suggest initiating a three-day course of antibiotic therapy to address any underlying bacterial infection that may be present. Alongside this, incorporating an expectorant syrup can help alleviate the discomfort associated with coughing and promote the expulsion of phlegm.

It's important to prioritize rest and hydration during this time to support your body's natural healing process. If your symptoms persist or worsen despite these measures, I recommend seeking further evaluation from a healthcare professional for a comprehensive assessment and personalized treatment plan.
