Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Hi, I am a 29-year-old female. I had sex on November 30th, but I took EllaOne 30 mg within 1 hour because the condom broke. My period start date was November 15th, and I have a 28-day cycle. Can you advise if there is any risk of pregnancy?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the response to your query below.

Assuming that you had sex in the middle of your cycle (ovulation day) and that ELLAONE worked, you shouldn’t be worried about the "risk" of pregnancy. We usually don’t like to talk about "risk"—it’s more of a chance than a risk, since pregnancy is NOT a disease nor an illness.

After ovulation, the egg must be fertilized by sperm within 24 hours. After that time, it will not be possible to become pregnant before your next period. Sperm movement is slow (less than an inch per hour), which means the chances of becoming pregnant, even without the "pill" after sex, are very rare.

In about 10 days, you’ll have a clearer picture.

Thanks
