Why Is My Period Late with Light Brown Blood?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m really worried because I haven’t had my period for the past 2-3 months. When I do get it, the flow is very light, and the blood is brown instead of red. This started happening around March or April, but before that, my periods were always heavy with bright red blood. I don’t know what’s causing this change or if something is wrong. My cycle has never been this irregular before. What could be the reason for this, and what should I do?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It's important to keep track of your menstrual cycle by maintaining a diary to record the timing, flow, and any other symptoms you experience. I would also recommend getting an ultrasound scan to help identify the cause of your irregular bleeding. There are several possible reasons for these changes, including hormonal imbalances, anovulation (lack of egg formation), stress, infections, or, in rare cases, early signs of more serious conditions like endometrial issues.

2. The appropriate treatment will depend on the underlying cause, so I strongly advise consulting a gynecologist for a thorough evaluation. An internal examination may also be necessary to get a clearer picture of what’s happening. Seeking medical attention sooner rather than later can help you get the right diagnosis and treatment plan.

Thanks
