Why Haven’t I Gotten My Period After Taking an I-Pill?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I took an i-pill on November 15th, and I had withdrawal bleeding on November 23rd. In December, my period arrived on the 23rd as expected, but now it's January, and I still haven’t gotten my period. I haven’t had sex after November 14th, and my pregnancy test is negative. I’m feeling very low, experiencing acidity, and noticing acne breakouts. What could be the reason for my delayed period?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It is common for emergency contraceptive pills like the i-pill to cause temporary hormonal imbalances, which can lead to irregular periods. Since your pregnancy test is negative and you haven't had intercourse after November 14th, pregnancy is unlikely. However, delayed periods can also be caused by stress, hormonal fluctuations, nutritional deficiencies, or underlying conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid imbalances.

2. To determine the exact cause, a thorough evaluation is needed. I recommend a clinical examination along with blood tests to check hormone levels (such as thyroid function and prolactin), a urine test, and an ultrasound scan if necessary. Once the cause is identified, appropriate treatment can be advised to regulate your cycle. If you continue to feel low, experience persistent acidity, or have worsening acne, consulting a doctor promptly will help address any underlying health concerns.

Thanks
