Why Has My Period Stopped for Over a Year at 21?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

How do I get my period back? I’m 21 and haven’t had a proper period in over a year — just light spotting for a day or two. I used to have heavy periods, but they started getting lighter a couple of years ago. I had unprotected sex months ago, but took a pregnancy test (negative). I’m trying to eat better and cycle sync, but it’s not helping. I’ve been stressed lately after my mom passed, but this started before that. I can’t see a doctor right now and I’m really worried.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

There are many reasons your period could stop — from hormonal imbalances and thyroid issues to PCOS, stress, chronic anemia, or even infections like tuberculosis. Emotional stress can make it worse, but since this started earlier, a medical cause should be ruled out. You need basic tests like hormone panels, thyroid function, and possibly an ultrasound. I recommend seeing a doctor, even online if needed. Once the cause is known, treatment can help restore your cycle.

Thanks
