Hello Doctor,
I started the Depo shot before my expected period, and I hadn’t had a period for 91 days. Then yesterday, I woke up to my underwear soaked in blood. I put on a pad, and there was a significant amount of blood, not just a few drops. I also used a tampon, and it was fully covered at the top. But today, there’s no blood at all. Is this normal after getting the Depo shot, or should I be concerned?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. It sounds like you experienced a sudden and heavy bleed after a long absence of your period, which can sometimes happen with the Depo shot. While irregular bleeding is a common side effect of Depo-Provera, a sudden heavy flow followed by no bleeding at all could indicate other underlying factors, such as hormonal fluctuations, uterine changes, or even a reaction to the shot itself.
2. To ensure everything is normal, it would be best to have a full gynecological evaluation. A pelvic ultrasound can help check for any issues such as fibroids, polyps, or other conditions affecting the uterus. Additionally, blood tests can assess your hormone levels and rule out other possible causes. If you experience further irregularities, prolonged bleeding, or other concerning symptoms like severe pain or dizziness, consult a doctor as soon as possible.
