Why Am I Late on My Period? Common Causes and What You Should Know

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am a 19-year-old female and I am currently 4 days late on my period. The only symptom I am experiencing is abdominal bloating, which is a typical PMS symptom for me. My periods are usually irregular, and this is the longest it's taken for me to start. I had unprotected sex about 2-3 weeks ago, but not during ovulation, and my partner used the pull-out method. I have taken 3 pregnancy tests — one on the second day, one on the third day, and one on the fourth day of my expected period cycle — and all came back negative. Should I be worried, or am I safe?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Based on the information you've provided, it's good that you've taken multiple pregnancy tests and they have all come back negative. However, since your periods are irregular and you are experiencing some symptoms, I would recommend getting an ultrasound scan to rule out any other potential issues and to be 100% sure. It’s always best to consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation if you’re feeling uncertain.

Thanks
