Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve been taking my birth control pills as directed and have been on the active pills. I had my period about two weeks ago, but now I’m bleeding again. It’s not my normal period time, so I’m a bit worried. Why is this happening? Could this be breakthrough bleeding, or should I be concerned about something else?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Bleeding between periods while on the birth control pill can sometimes occur, especially if you’ve recently started or switched pills. This is known as breakthrough bleeding and is usually not a cause for concern.

2. However, it’s important to take the pill consistently as directed in the pamphlet provided, as missing doses or taking it at different times can sometimes lead to irregular bleeding.

3. Since the specific type of pill you are taking is not mentioned, the cause could vary. If the irregular bleeding continues or becomes heavier, it’s best to get evaluated. A pelvic ultrasound and a Pap smear can help rule out any underlying issues, such as hormonal imbalances, infections, or other gynecological concerns.

4. If all test results are normal and the bleeding persists, it may be necessary to consider switching to a different form of contraception that better suits your body. Consulting a healthcare provider can help determine the best course of action.

Thanks
