Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve had my period for 18 days now, and I’m starting to get a little concerned. I’ve had my period for about three years, and my cycle length has always been a bit irregular, usually ranging between 23 to 43 days. I’ve never had sex, and right now, the bleeding is very light with minimal cramping. Should I be worried, and what could be causing this?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It’s important to get a proper evaluation to determine the cause of your prolonged bleeding. Since you’ve had your period for 18 days, a few tests are recommended, including a pelvic ultrasound to check for any abnormalities, a platelet count, and a hemogram to assess for possible anemia or clotting issues. While bleeding that lasts beyond 15 days may sometimes settle on its own, it’s still necessary to investigate the underlying cause, as prolonged periods can lead to anemia.

2. If anemia is present, you may need hematinics (iron supplements) or other medications to help restore your blood levels. Additionally, I recommend checking your blood pressure, as fluctuations can sometimes contribute to menstrual irregularities. Please consult a doctor soon to discuss your symptoms and determine the best course of action

Thanks
