Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently had an ultrasound, and the doctor mentioned there was no dominant follicle. Could you explain what that means? Is this something I should be concerned about in terms of my fertility?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

The dominant follicle is the one that matures each month within the ovary. During the menstrual cycle, this follicle reaches its largest size and eventually ruptures around the middle of the cycle, a process known as ovulation. When the follicle ruptures, it releases an egg (ova) that can then be fertilized by sperm, leading to pregnancy. If no dominant follicle is detected, it may suggest that ovulation hasn’t occurred as expected. This can be due to a variety of factors, such as hormonal imbalances or irregular cycles. However, this doesn't necessarily indicate a serious issue, but it could be something your doctor will monitor closely, especially if you're trying to conceive.

Thanks
