Nipple Discharge After Emergency Contraceptive: What Should I Do?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My partner and I had protected intercourse for the first time on August 10, 2024. It wasn’t a complete intercourse, but to be extra cautious, I took an emergency contraceptive pill within 20 hours. My period or withdrawal bleeding occurred on my usual date, August 19. However, on September 8, I noticed a small, watery, slightly cloudy discharge from my nipples. There's no pain or tenderness, but it’s been happening for the last few weeks, though only a tiny amount when pressed (like a dot). I’m not sure if this is normal. Please advise? No other symptoms, everything’s fine except the nipple discharge.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

This could be an early pregnancy or a pregnancy-related issue. I recommend taking a urine pregnancy test and, if negative, follow up with a blood sample for confirmation. A transvaginal scan can also provide clarity on the diagnosis. If pregnancy is ruled out, further tests for thyroid gland abnormalities or pituitary gland function may be necessary. A milky discharge and late period could be due to a hormone imbalance or a pituitary adenoma. Please consult a gynecologist, and if pregnancy is not present, consider seeing a neurologist as well.

Thanks!
