Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I took an abortion pill 4 weeks, 5 days ago. The tissue just passed last night. Do I need to go to a doctor? How long should I expect to bleed? When should I take a pregnancy test?

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It’s important to know how far along you were when you took the medication. Ideally, you should have taken two different medications: one pill that you swallow, followed later by four pills that you dissolve. If everything passed last night, you should expect light bleeding for about 2 to 10 days. A pregnancy test should show negative results in about 2 to 4 weeks, although it can remain positive until your body metabolizes the pregnancy hormones.

Your pregnancy symptoms, like breast tenderness and nausea, should start to fade within a few days. If these symptoms persist, I recommend seeing a doctor to ensure that everything has passed completely.

If you were early in your pregnancy (less than 9 weeks) when you took the medication, and everything seems to have passed with the correct medication, you may not need to see a doctor. Just take a pregnancy test in a couple of weeks. You should observe a change from a dark positive line to a faint line, and eventually, it should disappear.

However, if you weren’t early in your pregnancy, if you don’t think you had the right medication, or if you still feel pregnancy symptoms, I advise you not to wait to see if your pregnancy test turns negative. It could take several weeks, during which time you may need to retake the medication or consider a procedure (which are both very safe).

Feel free to schedule an appointment with me if you have any further questions!

Thanks
