Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I want to talk about my menstruation. I have been having irregular periods. For the last 3 months, I didn't get my period at all. Then, on February 16th, my period started and lasted for 15 days. I thought this might be normal because the blood had built up. Now, I am seeing a little dark brown discharge, which is making me very worried. Please help me find a solution.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

I would recommend that you undergo a series of hormonal tests. These tests include Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Estradiol, Progesterone, and Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAs). These tests are crucial in assessing your hormonal balance and should be performed on the 3rd day of your menstrual cycle, ideally in the morning. It is also important to ensure that you have not engaged in sexual intercourse for at least 3 days before taking these tests to avoid any potential impact on the results. Menstrual disorders like the one you are experiencing need to be diagnosed accurately and managed  effectively. In the meantime, considering the extended period of bleeding you have experienced, it is important to take steps to replenish your iron levels. I recommend that you start taking iron supplements to help boost your iron levels and prevent any complications related to iron deficiency anemia.

Thanks
